With a slate of new movies hitting theaters just in time for the holiday season, “Tron: Legacy” pulled away from the pack to kickstart the weekend of December 17-19th. The Disney flick starring Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde posted an impressive $18 million take on opening night – with estimates expecting a weekend total of $47 million. Coming in a distant second is the animated Dan Akroyd/ Justin Timberlake family film “Yogi bear 3D,” which earned $4.7 million on Friday on pace to a $17 million total.
Easily beating out the competition, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” claimed the top spot at the box office over the weekend of November 19-21st. Not disappointing studio execs, the Daniel Radcliffe / Emma Watson flick is estimated to have earned $125.1 million in total. The wizard-based movie toppled last week’s winner, “Megamind,” which had a weekend pull of $16.1 million while “Unstoppable” grabbed up third place at $13.1 million
It’s unlikely that anyone was surprised at the massive outpouring of theatergoers for last night’s midnight release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,” and as it turns out ticket sales were huge. The latest “Harry Potter” flick has proven to be the biggest seller so far, with a total of $24 million in sales at the 3,003 locations.
While it raced to the front of the pack on Friday, “Unstoppable” wasn’t able to keep up enough steam to hold off “Megamind” at the box office. Once again, the Brad Pitt / Will Ferrell animated flick took the top spot in its second week of release by pulling in an estimated $26 million take.
Battling it out for box office glory, “Unstoppable” and “Megamind” are neck and neck when it comes to earnings over the weekend on November 12-14th. The Denzel Washington / Chris Pine railroad thriller and the Will Ferrell / Brad Pitt animated flick are both on pace to rake in $25 million according to early estimates. Holding onto third place by a slim margin is the Robert Downey Jr comedy “Due Date, which is pacing towards $16,5 million in its second week of release.
Proving that American’s have an insatiable hunger for brazen stupidity, the Johnny Knoxville spearheaded “Jackass 3D” movie dominated the weekend box office. Stemming from the popular MTV show, the daredevil flick toppled expectations by raking in a jaw-dropping take of $50 million on opening weekend. Meanwhile, Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren’s action/comedy caper “Red” wound up placing second with $22.5 million in earnings.
Holding down the top spot once again, “The Social Network” is at the top of the pack at the box office for the second week in a row. The Facebook based flick, which stars Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg , was the top earner by pulling in $15.2 million in sales.
Making for an interesting face-off at the box office, “Machete” and “The American” are battling to top earnings over the holiday weekend. “The American” got a jump-start by opening up on Wednesday (September 1) which has allowed the George Clooney led project to sit in the No.
Making for ever-the-close race, “The Last Exorcism” seems to have narrowly defeated “Takers” for the August 27-29 top spot at the box office. According to studio estimates on Sunday, the Eli Roth driven horror flick had raked in $21.3 million in comparison to the star-studded Hayden Christensen /T.I
